Firewood or Coconut shell fired stoves are considered as preferred options and a few sets of stoves are already been developed with the support of the NERD Center.

Bio gas-fired stove options are also in the design stage to minimize LPG or electricity usage in the cooking process.

Converting Kitchen, Cooking and Food Waste to Wealth

Converting kitchen and food waste to wealth is a beneficial model for maintaining a clean school environment and educating students and parents about waste management. Additionally, it can serve as a lesson on how to turn waste into valuable resources.
Currently Rise Up has designed special waste to wealth projects to convert coconut husk, coconut shell, coconut scrap waste, food waste with the assistance of multiple stakeholders specialized in the conversion processes.

Bokashi Composting Project

Avaaya Research the managing entity of Rise Up Program is working on a model to introduce bokashi composting to schools.
The liquid and solid fertilizer developed through the system is to be used in school home gardens and local home gardens, adding more sustainability to the program.

Coconut Oil Project

From March 2023 onwards all the schools in Rise Up program will only use coconut oil produced using the coconut scrap waste of the school meal program.
After sun drying the coconut scrap waste, small scale oil extractors developed by the Nerd Center will extract oil required for the program.

Coconut Shell Project

Rise Up is setting coconut shell collection centers in schools to link with the activated carbon supply chain in Sri Lanka.
The revenue collected through the program will be channeled back to student collectors and school meal programs in respective schools.
