With sharp increase of milk powder prices in Sri Lanka, most of the families are giving up milk drinking habit which has negatively affected the nutrition among children. Rise Up School Milk Program is restoring the milk drinking habit among children through a cup of milk served in the morning as a breakfast supplement.

Features of School Milk Program

Fresh milk needed is directly sourced from the farmers close to schools.

Fresh milk bought from farmers is delivered to the school within 2 hours of milking when purchased directly.

Milk collection centers close to schools are also liked to the program to strengthen the supply chain.

Milk is boiled in schools and served warm during the morning hours.

Building Local Capacity to Supply Fresh Milk

Rise Up is developing a model for establishing small-scale dairy processing units in partnership with farmers to ensure the quality of milk through pasteurization and to create sustainable programs by producing value-added products such as yogurt, butter, and cheese. The goal is to support the national effort for milk sufficiency and to integrate dairy products into the daily diets of local communities.

Milk Coolers to Farmers

Cooling milk immediately after milking until pasteurization is the safest way to preserve milk quality and ensure milk not getting spoiled. Rise Up currently working on building a model to provide milk coolers to farmers to improve the quality of milk sourced.

Milk Warmers to School

Considering the nutrient losses due to boiling of milk , Rise Up is running a pilot project to introduce milk warmers which can also work as pasteurizers to increase the safety of milk provided to children, while preserving key nutrients. This also help to heat up chilled pasteurized milk.

Procuring Pasteurized Milk

Due to supply shortages in many areas where there is very little or no milk farming, Rise Up is working with existing milk processing companies to purchase pasteurized milk at preferred rates to ensure all schools covered by Rise Up can run the school milk program along with Rise Up meals.
